What is Organic?  In agriculture it means farmers who farm without chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, GMOs (genetically modified organism), hormones or antibiotics.  It also means farmers who put the welfare of their animals ahead of profits.  In processing it means companies who only use organic products and practices in the making of their products (anything from hand soap to hamburgers to Hard Red Spring Wheat).

What is Certified Organic?  With respect to the above it means anyone who is going one step further and having an accredited third party verify that what they are doing/processing is indeed as they say it is - organic.  Look for the Certified Organic symbol or wording on the package of the product.

Why would we advertise for someone who isn't certified organic?  Some producers feel that the costs of certifying their products are too cost prohibitive for their small operations.  Other small farmers who do not use pesticides or hormones and antibiotics have a local clientele who buy their products at the 'farm gate'.  They don't profess to be certified organic, they simply choose to farm without chemicals and their clientele know and trust them.  Many of them are legitimate, small 'clean' family farmers (key being, small and family farmers).  You might want to get to know them as well and decide if they are trustworthy.

There here!
The word 'organic' is now regulated in Canada.  Well kinda!  The Canadian Organic Standards are in place and the word 'organic' is regulated with respect to inter-Provincial trade.  This means that only someone who is producing a certified organic product, may use the word organic when they are selling goods across provincial boundaries.  However, because the provinces haven't ratified the National Standards the word organic is not regulated if you are not selling your product across provincial boundaries.

So what does all this mean?  Well unfortunately, you as the consumer still has to be a very discriminating buyer and look for the Certified Organic symbol  to be absolutely certain that what you are buying is certified organic.

Again, look for the  Certified Organic symbol  or wording on the packaging to be sure it is certified organic .
