(It would be a good idea to go to
the A
Few Terms page prior to navigating this page.)
For each province the categories will be alphabetized either vertically
or horizontally.
Groceries
|
| These will be stores that offer anything from produce to shampoo to dry
goods. Some stores may be exclusively organic, others may just
offer some organic products and perhaps only at certain times of the
year. Phoning ahead may be good idea.
Some products that are labeled as organic may have some ingredients
that are organic or certified organic and some that are not. Other products
may have no ingredients that are organic or certified organic, they are simply
natural (natural can mean anything). If you want a product that is
certified organic, look the symbol on the outside of the package.

Just
Meat |
| These stores will specialize in
organic and certified organic meat; your local butcher perhaps or an
on-farm store. Again, if you want to be sure that the meat has
been raised and processed under certified conditions, look for the certified symbol on
the packaging.
For farmgate meat you can ask to see the farm's organic
certification papers for livestock. Many farms certified for
organic beef, for example, will not have access to a certified abbatoire
or butcher shop so they will not be able to advertise the retail product
as certified organic but it was still raised subject to
certifying standards if they have their certificate. It is a good idea to develop a
relationship with who you are dealing with so that you can build a trust
to ensure that what they are saying is true. |

Pet
Food |
| The new Canadian regulations
will not be covering pet food so you will not be able to find a
Certified Organic Canadian stamp on it. It will be up to you the
buyer to know who you are buying from. |

Beer
& Wine |
| Many liquor board stores will
stock a small selection of certified organic beers and wines or they
will order some in for you. It is a good idea to phone ahead and
ask them what they have for a selection, before you make the drive. |

Health
Stores |
| These may be the hardest stores
to navigate through. They will have products listed as natural,
organic, certified organic, etc. Many products will be called
organic even if only a few of the ingredients are in fact organic or
certified organic. Products that are listed as natural may have
some or none of their ingredients as natural or organic. Look for
the certified organic symbol if you want to know for sure that it is
indeed certified organic. |

Lawn
& Garden |
| These stores will have anything
from lawn & flower seeds to organic fertilizers & pest control
products. Look for the certified organic symbol if you want to know
for sure that it is indeed certified organic. |

Feed,
Seed & Supplements |
| Because there are not a lot of
stores that stock organic farm/ranch supplies we will be using this
catch-all category for the time being. Look for organic livestock
supplements, inoculants, seed company's, etc. here. When the
stores become too numerous to navigate, we will create additional
categories. |

Restaurants
This category will include restaurants and bed and breakfasts' that
serve exclusively organic or some organic menu items. You will
want to call ahead, as we have found that to date, (Jan. 2008) there are
virtually no restaurants serving exclusively organic foods, never mind
certified organic. However, we want to get the word out that we
would like to be able to eat out, organically, and hopefully the
restaurants listed here are just a start. |

Farmers Market |
Many farm gate producers of
organic, certified organic or free range livestock, sell their foods at
farmer's markets. We are listing farmer's markets that have been
listed by the farms as a place to go to buy their products.
Farmer's Markets are typically seasonal between June and October and of
course the products available vary from market to market, and from week
to week.
